Innovation is a tradition in the visual arts at The University of Iowa. The University of Iowa was among the first in the country to unite studio art, art history, and art education, and it remains among only a few university programs to offer art history and studio courses in the same school. Iowa was one of the first universities in the country to bring professional artists to its permanent faculty. In the 1930s, the uniquely Iowan vision of faculty member Grant Wood gained worldwide acclaim. The School of Art and Art History is one of the University of Iowa's premier programs, ranked the sixth-best art school in the nation by U.S. News and World Report.

Notable alumni include Riva Castleman of the Museum of Modern Art in New York City; artist Ellen Lanyon, whose work can be seen at New York City's Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Art Institute of Chicago; Elizabeth Catlett, sculptor; Miriam Shapiro, painter/sculptor, co-originator of the feminist art program at the California Institute of Arts, and co-founder of the Feminist Art Institute of New York City; and Thomas Lawton, retired director of the Freer Gallery of Chinese Art, and Roy Sieber, former co-director of the museum of African Art, both of the Smithsonian Institution.
